While boom boxes were getting bigger in the 80s, TVs were getting smaller, much smaller! The idea of the Watchman was to be to TV what the Walkman was to music. The high price point however meant that they weren’t really affordable for the masses. If you did manage to get your hands on one they were really cool.
5. The Compact Disc
The CD was first produced in 1982, the first one to roll of the presses in america was Born In The U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen. It was still a few years before CDs really made the impact that would see the decline of sales of Vinyl and Cassette. It was only when CD players became cheap enough to be in every home, did their impact really become aparant.
6. Video Recorders
The Video Recorder changed the way we watched TV and movies. Before their introduction you could only watch a TV programme when it aired on TV, and the only way to see a movie was to visit the cinema. Once these were in every home video rental businesses popped up in every town in the country. Now you could watch the big block busters in your own home! There were two main formats VHS and Betamax. Betamax wa the far superior technology but this made it expensive and it quickly lost out to the cheaper more affordable VHS.
